Sump Pump Installation Cost
Sump pump installation cost depends mostly on whether you already have a pit. Replacing a pump in an existing pit is the smaller job. Adding a new pit means cutting and digging the floor, installing a liner and running a discharge line through the wall. Adding a battery backup raises the price but protects you during power outages.
If the new pit will be fed by interior drain tile, the two are usually priced together. Read more about sump pump installation and repair.
What Changes the Price
Where the water comes in
One leaking crack is a small job. Water along every wall and the floor joint usually means a perimeter drain system.
Size and layout of the basement
Drain tile is priced by the linear foot. Finished walls, stairs, furnaces and built-ins that must be worked around add labor.
Wall type and condition
Poured concrete, concrete block and fieldstone are repaired differently. A wall that has bowed needs bracing before or along with waterproofing.
Interior or exterior approach
Exterior work means excavation, which costs far more and depends on access, depth and what sits next to the wall, such as a driveway or deck.
Sump pump and backup choices
Cast iron pumps, higher capacity models and battery or water-powered backups each add to the price, along with discharge line routing.
Permits and finishes
Some projects need a permit. Patching concrete, replacing drywall or restoring landscaping after the job may or may not be included in a quote.
How to Compare Quotes
- Make sure each quote covers the same scope: which walls, how many feet of drain, which pump.
- Ask what is included after the work, such as concrete patching, cleanup and haul-away.
- Ask for warranty terms in writing, including whether they transfer if you sell the house.
- In Pennsylvania, check that the contractor's home improvement registration number appears on the contract.
- Be wary of a very low price for a full-perimeter system, or pressure to sign the same day.
